Laughing Belly is founded on the ethos of Slow Food. Slow Food is an international movement founded in Italy by Carlo Petrini in 1986. Promoted as an alternative to fast food, it strives to preserve traditional and regional cuisine and encourages farming of plants, seeds and livestock characteristic of the local ecosystem. The movement has since expanded globally to over 100,000 members in 150 countries. At its heart is the aim to promote local foods and centuries-old traditions of gastronomy and food production. Conversely this means an opposition to industrial food production where the fundamental character of foods are altered by the use of bio-chemical processing in order to achieve speed, convenience, large scale standardization, logistics and storage, all at the cost of the long term well-being of the consumers. Slow Food counters the concept of fast food and fast life by reviving people's dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.
